Despite the serious crisis affecting the automotive sector in 2009 and, in general, the Russian economy, the sector did register a good recovery in with the sale of new vehicles, estimated at around 1.7 million units. Since some time now, international manufacturers have decided to establish themselves in Russia. While there are several reasons for this choice, the first is the size of the market; Russia in fact has only 40 million vehicles for a population of 141 million inhabitants. The number of vehicles is in fact very low compared to the population: as reported by the Russian agency Autostat, in 2009 there were 210-230 cars per thousand inhabitants (By comparison it is enough to compare the same with Germany, where there are 500 cars per thousand inhabitants). Secondly we must consider that the majority of locally produced vehicles (which cannot count on same quality and competitiveness as the foreign competitors) are over 10 years old and the number of foreign vehicles hass significantly increased in recent years. This market, which encompasses a huge prod uct range, has a turnover of around US $ 46 million and is classified into two groups: one formed by components that are integrated directly in the assembly of automobiles and is worth US $ 11 million and the second, consisting of spare parts, which is valued at US $ 35 million. The Russian market is by no means simple, but the forecast are optimistic compared to the development of the sector, being one of the world markets with greater potential, in the next few years, it should in fact increase its value up to US $ 56 million.
